We all know it; we just choose to close our eyes to it. You know what I’m talking about…this throw-away society that we’ve become. We, collectively, can no longer deny the necessity for electronics recycling to become integrated into our waste disposal routine.  To do anything less is to be irresponsible.

In so many ways I know that I am being hypocritical. I still use paper towels. And I am positive that during my last household cleanout there was some recyclable trash sent out to the dumpsite ala my local hauling company.

About a year ago, Chris and I decided to join forces with a local electronics recycling company. We needed a way to help with the overflowing heaps of useless electronics, outdated small appliances, and anything else unwanted that plugs in. The thing is, I know we don’t see a thousandth of a percentage of the recyclable electronics that our local valley residents toss away.

As I drive through the streets of our local town or cruise the winding rural roads throughout neighboring townships in our beautiful Lehigh Valley, I see electronics waste all too frequently. There are decades old televisions tossed away on the street side,  small appliances covered in dirt on top of trash cans awaiting a new home, and old millennium towers thrown out of someone’s car door into an otherwise beautiful landscape. A landscape now marred with stuff that people have no use for. You get the point. One would think that with the new electronic recycling laws that have been enacted, this would all go to the wayside. Small mom and pop shops like us have the ability to help; it just seems that people aren’t aware we exist to help with that purpose.

Maybe you can help to spread the word.

Prior to the electronic age, this was the most
efficient way of spreading the word.

I know it’s hard sometimes to get to that honey-do list. And it’s especially hard to get to the ones that require us to go a little further out of our way to accomplish a task that may not seem worth it. After all we paid big bucks for that big screen TV to begin with, so why should we have to pay to get rid of it? The answer is very simple…because as consumers, it is our responsibility. Why do so many people think they are entitled to just walk away from that? I bought it, I used it, its lifespan is over and now it is time to recycle it responsibly. Period.

And by the way, for the majority of items, recycling your electronics with us is free. It just requires a few minutes of your time. For a few items, we do have to charge a fee because of the heavy metals and chemicals used in their components. That fee goes to the recycling company for the hazardous materials handling.  We’ve included a copy of our electronic recycling service flyer at the end of this post.

That’s it. Pretty simple.

For those laptops, PC’s, printers, and electronic devices you’re not sure are worth fixing or recycling- ask us! One of our staff members will be happy to help you out (and maybe save you some money too). I’ve personally been using the same laptop for about seven years. When it breaks, I fix it. When it is no longer fixable, it will be recycled.

If you’re not in the Lehigh Valley, give a visit to earth911.com to find an electronics recycling drop-off near you.  If one does not yet exist, check with your local township, borough, or county as many offer special electronics waste recycling events once or twice a year.
